Modern tattoo designs are so sophisticated and varied that if you were to encounter them in another medium you often wouldn’t recognize them as tattoos. This is unlike 1940’s era Sailor Jerry tattoos and traditional Japanese designs which are so clearly meant for the skin. In this series, I decided to contrast classic and typically male tattoo designs with the characteristically feminine medium of embroidery and create tattoos with my sewing needles.
